Reimagining New Year’s Resolutions: A Playful Path to Growth in 2025

As another year rolls in, many of us feel that familiar itch to set New Year’s resolutions. We dream of getting healthier (eating better, working out), learning cool new skills, better managing our finances, or finally organizing that cluttered closet. But let’s be real—by February, many of those goals are collecting dust (right next to that messy closet).

What if we tried something different this year—less of a to-do list and more of a life adventure fueled by what truly lights us up? Let’s dive into a playful and meaningful way to set resolutions that actually stick.

Look Back Before You Leap Forward

Before you charge into 2025 with sparkling ambition, take a pause. Where did the road take you in 2024? What made you smile? What stretched you, surprised you, or taught you something new?

Grab your favorite journal (or a random napkin—it works!) and jot down your wins, weird moments, and lessons learned. Even the flops count—they’re just plot twists in your story. 

Pick Your Word for 2025

What one word captures how you want to feel , something you want to do better, or who you want to become in 2025? Choose something meaningful—something that inspires you to live with purpose. I call this an “intention word.”

Write that word down in your journal and take a moment to reflect: Why did you choose this particular word? How will you use it to guide your actions? How do you hope it will shape your year (what result are you aiming for)? 

Need inspiration? Consider words like: Trust, Courage, Grit, Adapt, Organize, Balance, Joy, Fit, Focus, Adventure, Calm, Release, Patience, Presence, Excitement, Flow, Thankful, Kindness. Choose something that speaks to YOUR heart and fuels your spirit. 

Revisit this word often to remind yourself of your intention, your purpose. Consider posting it on your bathroom mirror, car dashboard, or anywhere you’ll see it daily for an extra boost of inspiration. 

The list below is meant to give you some ideas of how you might bring your “intention word” to life in 2025. 

1. Find Your Life’s North Star: Core Values

Think of your core values as your personal GPS. They point you toward what truly matters. If you’ve never done it, take a moment, grab a journal and write them down. Here’s some inspiration:

  • Relationships: Loving your people fiercely.
  • Health & Well-being: Feeling good from head to toe and inside and out.
  • Adventure & Exploration: Saying yes to new experiences.
  • Community Impact: Spreading kindness like confetti.
  • Personal Growth: Becoming the best version of your authentic self—flaws and all.

Pick values that make your heart say, “Yep, that’s me.” Let these be your life’s guideposts.

2. Set Intentions: How You Want to Show Up

Intentions aren’t about “achieving”; they’re about “being” and they are most effective when they align with your values. Who do you want to be as you move through life this year? How do you want to feel? What do you want to learn? 

Example:

  • Value: Health & Well-being
  • Intention: This year, I want to learn to exercise in ways that feels fun (buh bye going to the gym,- hello, joyful movement such as bike riding in the sunshine) AND fuel up with food that makes me feel fueled and awesome (buh bye boxed food and hello fresh fruits and vegetables).

Intentions help you live your values without the pressure of perfection.

3.  Make It Count with Fun Goals

Once your values and intentions are in place, set 2-3 playful goals using the SMART method:

  • Specific: Know exactly what you’re aiming for.
  • Measurable: Track progress so you can cheer yourself on.
  • Achievable: Aim high but keep it realistic.
  • Relevant: Stay true to your values.
  • Time-bound: Give it a deadline so it doesn’t  become “someday.”

Example SMART Goal: Save $5,000 by year-end by stashing $100 a week—your future-you will thank you!

4. Tiny Wins, Big Magic: Micro-Resolutions

Forget huge, sweeping resolutions. Break your goals into micro-resolutions—small, fun actions that create a ripple effect.

Example: Instead of “work out every day,” try “do 5 minutes of stretching every morning.” Boom—instant win!

5. Check In and Cheer On

Life’s a rollercoaster, so check in with yourself regularly. Monthly or quarterly, reflect on what’s working and what needs a tweak. Create fun monthly themes like “Bold February” or “Mindful May” to keep the energy fresh.

6. Share the Love: Give Back

Make room for kindness. Set one goal that gives back to your community—big or small.

Examples: Mentor someone, volunteer monthly, donate (perhaps some “stuff” from that messy closet), or support a cause that makes your heart happy.

7. Stay Mindful, Stay You!

Mindfulness isn’t about sitting cross-legged on a mountain top (though I’ve done that and it’s pretty cool). It’s about being present in everyday moments. Try gratitude journaling, mindful walks, daily meditation, or even a few deep breaths before your next meeting.

As 2025 kicks off, remember that growth isn’t about perfection—it’s about living fully, with heart and purpose. Let your “intention word” guide you on a joyful adventure, rather than becoming another resolution that falls off your radar by February.
