Cooks Note #1: I like to buy vanilla or unflavored protein powder because of it’s versatility as it pairs with just about anything (chocolate, fruit, veggies, or whatever else you choose). And I always choose unsweetened (or lightly sweetened with monk fruit or other natural sugars over sugar additives, or sugar substitutes, including stevia). That said, you could use chocolate protein power in this recipe. If you do, you’d probably want to reduce the amount of cocoa powder you add (or eliminate the cocoa powder completely) based on your taste.

Cooks Note #2: Here’s the “how to” make date paste

Date Paste Ingredients:

1 pound of pitted dates (I use the Desert Valley Organic Dates pictured. I buy them at Costco).

1.5 cups of liquid (I use water to keep the calories lower, but you could also use coconut water, unsweetened non-dairy milk or unsweetened juice)

Date Paste Procedure: Let the dates sit overnight to absorb most of the water. Then dump them into the food processor (with the S blade), and process dates and liquid until it’s smooth (about a minute or two). I store my paste in the fridge where it’ll keep for about a month so it’s ready to go when I need to whip up a healthy no added sugar dish. If you need to keep it longer than a month, freeze it! This particular smoothie recipe is best with frozen date paste.

Use this delicious paste in various recipes instead of added sugar.
