Healthy Eats- Banana Bread Recipe With No Added Sugar

Why is it that so many “no sugar” recipes online actually have added sugar? I mean really! A lot of the time, the recipe has what I call “hidden” sugar like honey or maple syrup, which sounds more natural and healthy but behaves the same way as plain old table sugar in the body. Or coconut sugar which somehow everyone thinks is healthier than regular sugar (but again the body treats it exactly the same as table sugar). Or the recipes include hidden sugar, sugar substitutes or artificial sweeteners that are loaded with chemicals and who knows what else.

Why can’t I find a healthy no sugar recipe that really has NO added sugar (none, zero, nada)?

Out of my frustration, today is your lucky day!  Over the last few weeks, I developed a no added sugar, no white or wheat flour, and no oil or butter, Banana Bread recipe. After several attempts, I finally found a combination that turned out delicious.  It’s my gift to you. A healthy recipe for Banana Bread with no added sugar (of any kind)!  Really!

Now…please understand, it’s not exactly the same as the sugar filled banana bread you are used to eating. And it’s definitely not as pretty as the banana breads that your Mom or Grandmother make. But it tastes really good and it’s so much healthier with almond flour instead of processed white or wheat flour and absolutely no added sugar, sugar substitutes or artificial sweeteners. What sweetens this recipe is the natural sugar found in both the almonds and bananas. Natural sugars are the good kind of sugar that our bodies are designed to eat. In other words, the only sugar in this recipe is what occurs naturally in the almonds (almond meal) and the bananas.

I hope you enjoy this truly no added sugar no artificial sweetener banana bread. It’s even better if you double the recipe and bake it all in one bread pan.

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups Almond Meal (see note below)
  • 1 tsp Baking Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Sea Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Ground Cinnamon
  • 3 Ripe Bananas (mashed)
  • 2 Large Eggs (beaten)
  • ½ tsp Vanilla Extract

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 325 degrees. Spray a 9X5 baking pan with avocado oil spray (or grease pan with ½ tsp avocado oil).
  2. In medium bowl sift together dry ingredients: almond meal, baking powder, sea salt and cinnamon. In small bowl, whisk eggs with vanilla and then blend the mashed bananas into the mix and combine with spoon. Pour egg mixture in the medium bowl with dry ingredients, and blend with spoon, just enough to combine everything.
  3. Spoon bread mixture into the baking pan and bake 50-55 minutes in a 325 degree oven.
  4. Let cool about 15 minutes, slice and serve. Store in an airtight container in the fridge. If serving the next day, it’s good at room temperature, but tastes best when toasted or reheated it in the oven so it’s warm.

Note: Almond meal is essentially ground almonds with the skin of the almonds left on the nut before being ground vs. almond flour where the skin is removed before the almonds are ground. Either will work in this recipe, I just happened to have almond meal on hand when I made the recipe. The almond meal is a little heavier so it makes the bread even more dense than with the almond flour (also dense).
