Apple Banana Salad – How To Make Grandma’s Recipe Healthy

There are recipes that taste like home — the kind that bring someone you love right back into the kitchen with you. This family favorite is all my grandma. She made it often, and every time I whip it up, I can almost hear her humming while she worked.

But this version gets a modern refresh — still creamy and comforting, but made with unsweetened coconut yogurt and avocado mayo instead of the heavy, processed oils found in “regular” mayo. It’s simple, fresh, and proof that you don’t need a dozen ingredients to make something delicious.

Great for breakfast or as a side next to chicken or ham. Also great for desert!

Ingredients

  • 1 red apple, chopped
  • 1 banana, sliced
  • 1 lemon (zest + juice)
  • 1 small container unsweetened coconut yogurt (I like Harmless Harvest)
  • 1 tablespoon avocado mayo
  • ¼ cup chopped walnuts
  • Optional: raisins and Ceylon cinnamon to taste

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the chopped apple and sliced banana.
  2. Zest the lemon, then squeeze the juice over the fruit to keep it fresh and bright.
  3. Add the coconut yogurt and avocado mayo, stirring gently until everything is lightly coated.
  4. Fold in the walnuts (and raisins or cinnamon if using).
  5. Serve immediately or chill for 10–15 minutes for a colder, creamier texture.

Tip: This recipe makes two servings. Double or triple it for family gatherings — it’s always a hit.

Bon Appetit!
