As the sun stretches her warm rays across the northern hemisphere, bringing us longer days and beckoning us to step outside and embrace the world beyond our concrete jungles, it’s impossible to ignore the magnetic pull of nature. Whether we think about it or not, there’s an innate understanding within us that nature holds the key to our vitality, both mentally and physically.
Modern life can be so demanding, requiring our focused energy day in and day out, and frankly it’s beyond draining. As a result, our attention and energy is constantly being sapped. But being in nature is replenishing in so many ways. If you haven’t been out in nature lately, nows the time!
Taking a moment to notice colors in nature, the green trees, the blue sky, the sprouting yellow flowers brings us a sense of peace. Pausing for a moment, taking time to sit on a rock and listen to the sounds of the rushing river go by, I find myself totally in the moment thinking only about the beauty around me, the birds singing, and the wind rustling in the trees. Somehow helps to refill my tank almost instantly.
Recently my partner in crime (my dog, Olive) and I escaped the city and ventured out into the great outdoors to do some camping and hiking in the heart of the mountains. Nestled among towering pines and serenaded by the melodious symphony of a flowing river, we found solace away from the noise of city life. The air, crisp and pure, seemed to cleanse not only our lungs but our souls as well.
As we embarked on our hiking journey, each step upon the earthen trail served as a reminder of our physical connection to the natural world. The rugged terrain challenged our muscles in ways that the monotony of urban landscapes never could. But with each uphill climb and rocky descent, we felt invigorated, as if our bodies were awakening from a long winter slumber.
Amidst the majesty of the forest, we were humbled by the grandeur of life in its various forms.
From the majestic deer gracefully traversing their woodland domain to the mischievous raccoons scavenging for a snack, and the delicate dance of a butterfly through our campsite, nature’s inhabitants reminded us of our place within the intricate web of existence. And who could forget the industrious bee, darting among the wildflowers along our hiking trail, diligently collecting nectar and pollinating as it went about its vital work? In their presence, we reveled in the simplicity of just being.
The act of camping itself is a sacred communion with the elements. It compels us to surrender the shackles of modern life, if only for a fleeting moment, and embrace the timeless rhythm of nature. With each breath of fresh mountain air, our bodies felt rejuvenated, energized by the vitality of the natural world surrounding us.
In the embrace of nature, our senses awakened to a symphony of sensations long forgotten.
Escaping to the forest was like getting a big and much needed hug from Mother Nature. The whispering breeze carried with it tales of ancient wisdom, while the babble of the river lulled us into a state of tranquility. We inhaled deeply, savoring the aroma of pine needles and damp earth, while our eyes feasted upon the kaleidoscope of colors that adorned the landscape.
But perhaps, most importantly, nature served as a gentle reminder of our inherent interconnectedness. As we gazed upon the landscape around us, we were reminded that we are but one thread woven into the rich tapestry of life. With each breath, we were nourished by the same air that sustained the mighty pine and the delicate wildflower alike.
Letting go of all our responsibilities and “to-do’s” and disconnecting from the daily grind even for a short weekend in nature did wonders for the soul. Even Olive felt the hug from Mother Earth. She had an extra pep in her step, she smiled and she thoroughly enjoyed exploring all the new and different scents that she picked up along our hikes.
Camping is something I haven’t done in several years, and I’m glad to be back at it again as it allows me to attune back into the earth’s natural rhythms. It reminds me that I’m as much a part of nature as the leaves on the trees or the water in the river, and that every step I take in the wilderness is a step towards physical and spiritual renewal.
In returning to the embrace of nature, I find not only renewal but reconnection. I am reminded that I am not merely a visitor but a partaker in nature’s eternal dance.
So, as the seasons shift and the call of the wild grows ever louder, let us heed nature’s gentle calling. Might we venture our with open hearts and willing spirits, ready to embrace the boundless gifts that Mother Earth so generously bestows upon us. For in her embrace, we find not only solace but salvation—a pathway to inner peace in an increasingly chaotic world.
If you are compelled to journal about your hikes or visits in nature, hike on over to the merch page and scroll down to the journals. I made a hiking journal so I could document my own hikes and you can get yours HERE.
