Glow Through The Holidays Feeling Great With This Self-Care Guide

The holidays are magical, but they can also feel like a whirlwind of commitments, to-do lists, and high expectations. It’s easy to put yourself last in the rush to make the season special for everyone else—but here’s a little secret: prioritizing self-care can make the holidays even more magical.

As someone who’s learned to embrace self-care as a daily practice, I know how transformative it can be. With a few intentional habits and a focus on what truly matters, you can stay centered and joyful all season long. Let me show you how I make it work, even during the busiest time of the year.

Holiday Self-Care, My Way

Over the years, I’ve developed a self-care routine that keeps me feeling energized and grounded no matter how hectic life gets. During the holidays, I double down on these practices to ensure I’m showing up as my best self:

  • Morning Rituals That Shine: My mornings are my time, a sacred moment just for me before the day begins. I start with red light therapy, either meditating or doing gentle warm-up stretches while basking in its glow. This moment isn’t about stillness but about connection—tune in to my body and preparing for the day ahead. As I get ready for work, I stand on a grounding mat, which helps me feel centered and balanced before stepping into the world. These practices set a positive tone for everything that follows, giving me clarity and focus.
  • Evening Wind-Down: After work, I take my dog for a walk to help us both unwind and enjoy the fresh air. I meditate every night before bed. I start with focused breath work, think about all the things that I’m grateful for, and then do a full-body scan meditation that helps me get in touch with my body. Some evenings, I indulge in a hot bubble bath by candlelight, often pairing it with soothing, relaxing music. These rituals help me transition into a restful night and wake up the next morning feeling refreshed.
  • Journaling for Clarity: Journaling has been a game-changer in my self-care routine. While I sometimes need to force myself to make the time (especially when I’m feeling pressed for it), I always feel better afterward. Journaling clears my mind, helps me process emotions, and creates space for clarity. It’s also where I jot down to-do lists, reminders, and random thoughts—it’s like clearing mental clutter so I can reconnect with myself and focus on what truly matters.
  • Mindful Movement: Exercise is my daily dose of feel-good energy any time of year, but during the fall and winter season, whether it’s snowshoeing, a snowy walk in the neighborhood with my dog, an out-of-town yoga class, or even dancing to holiday tunes in my living room, moving my body is essential. The holidays are busy, but I always find time to move—it’s what keeps me balanced and in a high-vibe state.
  • Nourishing Foods: Eating foods that make me feel good inside and out is a cornerstone of my self-care routine. As with any time of year, I make a conscious effort to fuel my body with high-vibration fresh whole foods that give me energy and make me feel good. But during this season, it requires additional strategies and focus to avoid temptations. I love to create new and festive colorful salads, hearty soups, and “healthified” family favorites. I find that when I prioritize nourishing foods, I feel more energized and can enjoy the season without feeling guilty or weighed down.
  • Red Light Therapy: Another practice that has transformed my self-care routine this year is red light therapy. So much so that it’s become a daily part of my self-care routine, and the benefits are undeniable. Whether it’s red light or near-infrared, this therapy is about healing and restoring the body, even at a cellular level. It promotes skin health, reduces inflammation, supports muscle recovery, improves sleep, and even boosts mood—excellent for daily use but especially important as part of taking care of myself during the holiday hustle. I find it to be both a peaceful and energizing start to my day.

Protecting Your Holiday Glow

The holidays are a time of connection, but they can also be draining if you don’t set boundaries. I’ve learned to protect my energy by saying no to things that aren’t aligned with my values. It’s not always easy, but it’s essential for maintaining my well-being.

One thing I never forget is that self-care isn’t just about me—it’s also about the people I care for. Think of it like the oxygen mask rule on an airplane: you put yours on first so you can then help others. When I prioritize my own well-being, I show up as my best self—more present, more patient, and more joyful for others. That means I’m able to fully give to the people and moments that matter most during the holidays.

Sometimes the best gift you can give yourself is permission to rest—whether it’s simply unplugging, enjoying a quiet moment with a cup of tea or taking a midday nap to recharge. The more you honor your needs, the more you’ll be able to fully embrace the joy of the season.
